 Using Technology in Private

There are quite a few ethical and social Issues when it comes down to Information Technology. Both ethical and social issues comes from our use of technology in all aspects our lives. Which leads to the  creation of a new branch of ethics, techno-ethics.  Techno-ethics focuses on discovering the ethical use of technology, and protecting against the misuse of technology. This is used as a guide for advanced applications in technology to aid with benefiting the society. Technology is advancing in areas unseen by many and individuals are  becoming more involved with technology in many new ways. Information within the workplace is being shared globally within short periods of time. Which leads to employees being able to work from their homes.


What can be done when using technology in private:

  • Communicate virtually with other employees (By using zoom, google meets, Skype, etc.)
  • Connecting with Friends and Family while on breaks via social medias. (WhatsApp, Facebook, Instagram, etc.)
  • Communicate with work groups or managers via email (To discuss work related information as well as confidential information.)
  • Creating documentations and presentations for work (Word documents, PowerPoint presentations, etc.)
  • Taking work related calls (On applications such as Five9 salesforce, Pc phone calls, WhatsApp, etc.)











What cannot be done when using technology in private
  • Accessing confidential file
  • Leaving your work tasks unattended 
  • Misusing work resources (Your work desktop, Telephone, etc. To get on social media to or to give a call to your friends to gossip) 
  • Giving out confidential information to others 
  • Hacking work files and applications


Employer monitoring of worksites



This is where employers can gain valuable insight from the employee computer activities in the workplace. They are able to track what an employee is doing with his/her time on the job and how much time they spend doing it.

Why is it necessary

  •  It shows the productivity that they are contributing to the Organization.
  •  It would be an alternative way of tracking attendance if card swiping or scans are not available.
  •  It contributes to the safety of the company by protecting the environment they work in.
  •  It protects the Organization from arising any illegal action from employees.

Off- the- job behaviour


Corporate use of Information should not be disclosed to the public or anyone outside of the Organization. Joining a company comes with agreeing to the confidentiality clause and there are consequences if an active employee participate in such misconduct.

What are the privacy?

  • There should be no exchanging of confidential data outside the Organization
  • Drug and alcohol abuse is grounds for dismissal of an employee.
  • Offensive behaviour such as physical fights or harassments to persons outside or inside the Organization
  • Theft or fraud



Personal Identification Information







Personal information is information used to identify or discover an individual. Non Personal identification information is information that cannot be directly traced to a specific individual. It can be collected when users would access a site for a company, and also from a IP address. Information that can be retrieved from cookies and web beacons are considered non personal identification information. It may also include information from the browsers they access.
